Step types and what each one does

Every step a workflow can contain, what it does on LinkedIn or by email, and which daily limit it counts against.

A workflow is built from the steps in the Modules list of the workflow builder. Each person goes through them one at a time, from the top.

Action steps

Connection requestSends the connection request, with a note if you add one.Connection requests

Every step on LinkedIn also counts as one profile view. An email step does not.

When a step is skipped

A step that cannot apply to a person is skipped, and the person moves on to the next step:

  • Send a message and Endorse a skill need a connection. LinkedIn only allows them once you are connected.
  • Like latest post is skipped if they have no posts.
  • Send an InMail is skipped for someone you are already connected to, because a message is free. It is also skipped for a profile that is not open, unless you allowed paid credits. See InMail and paid credits.
  • Send an email is skipped when there is no email address for the person, or when they have unsubscribed. See Email steps and connecting Gmail or Outlook.

Wait, branch and stop

  • Wait pauses the person for 1 to 72 hours, or 1 to 90 days. Tick or until they accept my request to end the wait early when they accept.
  • If they accepted sends people who accepted your request down Yes and everyone else down No. See Branching on whether someone accepted.
  • Stop here ends the workflow for anyone who reaches it.

Fields in messages

Messages, InMails and emails can use these fields, which are filled in for each person: {first}, {name}, {company}, {headline}, {calendar} and {my_name}.

If a field has nothing to fill it for someone, their message is not sent. It waits, and the Active page says which field is missing. Fill it in on the People page, or under Your details used in messages on the Limits and settings page for your own name and scheduling link.

The note on a connection request

A note can use {first}, {name}, {company} and {headline}. LinkedIn limits its length: 200 characters on a standard LinkedIn account and 300 on a paid one, not counting the fields. A standard account also gets 3 notes a month. After that, requests go out without a note.

The rule outside the workflow

The moment someone replies, their workflow stops and the conversation moves to the Inbox. So a workflow never needs a step that checks for a reply. See What happens when someone replies.
