The Send an InMail step writes to someone you are not connected to. By default it only sends InMails that are free.
Free and paid InMail
- Open profiles. An InMail to an open profile is free. The step sends it on every account, with the default settings.
- Everyone else. An InMail to a profile that is not open costs one of the paid InMail credits of your LinkedIn account. No step spends a paid credit until you switch that on for the account.
The credits are the ones your LinkedIn account has. NurtureLead does not sell InMail credits.
What the step does for each person
| The person | What happens |
|---|---|
| Has an open profile | The InMail is sent, free. |
| Does not have an open profile, paid credits switched off | The step is skipped and the person moves on to the next step. |
| Does not have an open profile, paid credits switched on | The InMail is sent and uses a paid credit. |
| Is already connected to you | The step is skipped, because a message is free. Use Send a message for connections. |
| Cannot be sent an InMail from your account | The step is skipped and the person moves on to the next step. |
The Active page shows the last result for each person, so you can see whether an InMail was sent or skipped, and why.
Allow paid InMail credits
The switch is per LinkedIn account and is off by default.
- Choose the account with the switcher at the top of the sidebar.
- Open Limits and settings.
- In the InMail card, switch on Allow spending paid InMail credits on this account.
- Press Save changes.
Switch it off again in the same place. InMails to open profiles are sent either way.
Write the InMail
- Open the workflow in the workflow builder and add Send an InMail.
- Type the message. It can be up to 1,900 characters and can use the same fields as a message:
{first},{name},{company},{headline},{calendar}and{my_name}. - Add a Subject if you want one. It is optional.
- Save the workflow.
An InMail needs no connection, so it fits on the No branch of If they accepted, or in a workflow with no connection request at all.
The daily limit
InMails have their own daily limit on the Limits and settings page: up to 10 a day on Starter and up to 30 a day on Pro, Team and Enterprise. Each InMail also counts as one profile view.
Replies to an InMail
Someone can answer an InMail without being connected to you. NurtureLead looks for those answers when it checks the account's messages. A reply stops the person's workflow and moves the conversation to the Inbox, where it carries the tag InMail. See What happens when someone replies.
